Doesn't it always happen when you find some information loads more comes! Well I have been able to find loads of information. I have an ancestor, William Newton Jackson and I couldn't find his birth or who his parents were due to his being born in the early 1800's. Birth, death and marriage records didn't start until 1837 so prior to this date we have to rely on parish records.
So I started my search in Chester Le Street, Durham and found an online record search which cost £4.50 for 4 records. So I searched William Newton Jackson and came across St Mary's and St Cuthberts Anglican church in Chester Le Street. The results were brilliant.
William Newton Jacksons' parents are William Jackson, b1789, and Mary Watson who were married in 1805 in St Marys' & St Cutherberts. Their whitnesses were Grace Martindale, Rob Nicholson, William Pybus, Edward Jackson and Margaret Jackson. I feel themay be siblings of William.
I also found Williams' parents who were William and Elizabeth.
Going back to William Newton Jackson; he married Cecily Isabella Proud in 1836 at St Nicholas Church, Newcastle.

World Roots Project
This is a new chat page that I have found where people will help with finding family members. Covering all the world, it is a brilliant project and a wonderful tool for people who are tracing their family tree.
Volunteers, God bless 'em, are willing to look up information for you pertaining to your family in certain areas. This is a God send if you live elsewhere in the country or even the world.

John Fraser b September 1801 in Middlesex
I have had a breakthrough, you know like an epiphany. I have searched forever for my ancesters mum and dad, which has been hard. On the 1911 census my ggrandmother stated that she had been born in Scotland but she came from Gateshead in Durham, where her father had been born. I understand her lodgic, with a name like Fraser but now I know differently.
On the 1861 census John Simon Fraser (1833-1861) states that he was born in Bethnal Green, Middlesex. This is part of Tower Hamlets. I have research his birth and have found not only his christening at St Dunston and All Saints Church, Stepney High Street, Mile End Old Town, but information about his mum and dad.
He was named for his father, John, who was born in 1801 but I'm not sure where and his mum is called Sarah Margaret Sharpe. She is stated as a widow on both Banns & Marriage Certificate. They were married at St Mary's Church, Upper Street, Islington in August 1832. Their Banns were read in July. St Mary's and St Dunstans are only about 4 miles apart.
Although I am excited about this, I cannot find them on the 1841 census. So it's a case of swings and roundabouts which can be quite annoying.

Ancestry World Project
Ancestry.co.uk are asking members to voluteer to collate information from documents onto a database. The information is downloaded and you key in the information. You have 10 days to do the document you choose and they range in difficulty from easy, to average to hard. A worthwhile project. I have included a link on the side bar.

Edith Elizabeth Fraser
Edith Elizabeth was born in 1887 in Gateshead. She worked in Moores hat factory and in 1910 she had a child out of wedlock, Ethel Fraser, my grandmother. Ethel was born in January 1910 and on 2nd April 1910, Edith married John Jones, son of Thomas Jones and Catherine Margerson. John was a labourer and seemed unable to provide for his wife and child, because in the 1911 census Edith is living with her sister Mary Emma Hallows. There is no sign of John but Edith is down as being married.
My grandmother was born in the old workhouse, in Ashton Under Lyne, which had turned into a hospital. I know of no reason why she could not return home other than disgrace.
My family member tells me that her husband talked about my grandmother and her mother living with them when he was a child. Edith had 5 or so children, and although I know of one other sister or half sister, I have heard of others but can find no evidence.
In May 1919 Edith Elizabeth died from pureperal fever after the birth of a baby. She died in Monsul Hospital, Prestwhich, Manchester. Edith had 5 children (unsure) who were sent to live with other members of the family.
This is speculative but I understand that the baby was adopted by the Robinson family who ran a brewery in Stockport. My grandmother, Ethel, went to live with her name sake, her Aunt Ethel and her husband James Edison Stafford. I will deal with this family later.
Ediths' body was identified by her father, William Jackson Fraser, and although she is still the wife of John Jones, William buried her in the family grave. I have a lot more questions about Edith and although my family member has been able to answer some questions, there are still more to be answered. I have no idea what happend to John Jones but I think he may have died in 1922.
I will deal with the children at a later date.

William Jackson Frasers Children
As stated earlier, William Jackson Fraser was my great grandfather. I intend to look at each of his children in turn.
Ernest William Fraser b 1883
From information from a family member I understand that Ernest returned to Gateshead, the town of his birth, where he joined the Merchant Navy. I am still researching him and his naval career but I understand he made Captain. In later life he returned to Denton in Manchester. I will put more in about him when and if I find anything.
Mary Emma Fraser b 1886
Mary Emma married Arthur Hallows in 1908 and they had four children. One child, Thomas, was born in 1919 and died as an infant.
John Robert Fraser b 1893
When John Robert was born in 1893 and I believe his mother died giving birth to him. I find very little information about John, except 1891, 1901 and 1911 census. On the 1911 census John is 18 years old and a furblowing laborour. Fur-blowing was a part of felt hat making. I have included a link to the description of the job.
On the cenataph in Victoria Park, Denton, there is a mention of a J R Fraser who died in 1916 and I think this may be John as I can find no more information about him. I have research the information I have but cannot find a regiment but I know that he died in France and is buried there. My family member never knew of his existence so I believe he did die during the Great War.
I will continue with William Jackson Frasers children later as I have more information about them to impart.

A Family from Gateshead
My mothers ancestors came from Gateshead and moved to Denton, in Lancashire some time between 1893 and 1896. I have set out the family tree below.
John ?Simon Fraser born Bethnel Green 1833 died 1861 in Gateshead.
Mary Alice Jackson born 1838 in Middlesborough, Yorkshire. Mary Alice and John married in South Shields in 1853 and had 4 children.
Children of John & Mary Alice
John Joseph born 1855 in Gateshead
Sarah Isabella Fraser born 1856 in Gateshead
William Jackson Fraser born 1858 in Gateshead (my ancestor)
Mary Elizabeth Agnes Fraser born 1861 in Gateshead.
I will deal with each family member before I get onto my ancestor.
John's parents, I believe are John Fraser and Elizabeth. I believe (no proof) that they were born in Scotland in 1801. John sgnr is believed to have had something to do with the railway and I do know that John jnr was an engine fitter and he died from throat cancer in 1861 aged 28.
Mary Alice Jackson was the daughter of William Newton Jackson (1810-1881) and Ciciley Isabella Proud (1811-1899). They married in 1836 in Durham. Mary Alice was an only natural daughter but her family did adopt Mary F Oliver who was born in 1850.
When John died from throat cancer in 1861 aged 28, Mary Alice narried Thomas Bolam Thompson (1835-1871) in 1868 in Newcastle. They had no children and Thomas died in 1871 aged 36. In 1882 she married William Sparke (1818-1886). She was 44 years old. I can find no death for Mary Alice Sparke in Gateshead.

Mary Elizabeth Agnes Fraser married John Hutchenson Mclardy in 1882 in Northumberland
Mary Elizabeth Agnes died in Australia in 1930. I know she had children but I have been unable to find much information about her life there.
William Jackson Fraser is my grandfather x 2 greats. He married Emma Jane Fawcett in Stockton On Tees in 1882. Emma Jane was born in 1866 and died in 1893, she was 27 years old and I think she may have died in childbirth, in Whitehaven, after the birth of her son John Robert. William moved his young family to Denton in Lancashire. William was a journeyman copperbeater and he was employed by Moores hat factory in Denton making copper kettles for the hats. I think he may have met Emma Jane because her brother was also a metal worker.
Their children
Ernest William b 1883 Gateshead
Mary Emma b 1886 Gateshead
Edith Elizabeth b 1887 d 1919 Gateshead
Ethel May b 1890 d 1956 Gateshead
John Robert b 1893 d 1916 Whitehaven
In 1896 William married Elizabeth Keenan the wife of the late Edward Keenan, who he had met in Whitehaven. Elizabeth was about 8 years older than William and she had a grown up family, 2 of who lived with her in Denton. Elizabeth died in 1906 and she is buried in the family grave in Denton Cemetry. In 1908 William married again. His new wife was from Peebles in Scotland. Mary Anne Moffat was the daughter of James Hood Moffat and Jane. When William died in 1936, Mary Ann returned to Scotland. An older family member says there is a story that Mary Anns' family were related to William Jackson Fraser and that he sent for her to come to look after him in his old age.

George Edward Jones & Florence May Whitehouse
George Edward Jones was born in 1880 in Kidsgrove, Staffordshire and he was my great grandfather, my mums grandad. She knew very little about him, especially his name as he was dead before she was born. I also know very little about George. It took me years to identify him as my mother relied on stories from her mother Ethel who married Georges son, Moses in 1929 and he was classed as dead on their marriage certificate.
In the 1901 census George was employed as a coke burner while in the 1911 census he was employed as a coal miner stoneman below ground. This is the fact, now for the family myth. I was told that George went to South Africa to work in the diamond mines and was killed in a collapsed tunnel. All that was found of him was his pocket watch and nothing else. So far I have been unable to confirm this and I have been unable to find his death record, so it remains, a mystery........
Florence was older than George, having been born, in Longton, in Staffordshire in 1877. They met and married in Hemsworth (coincidence) Yorkshire. They had 6 children, George Edward Jnr in 1903, Annie in 1904, Elisa May 1905, Moses 1909, Emma 1915 and Josiah Harold born 1919. My mum remembered Elisa and Emma and I knew Josiah better know as Jo until his death in 1983. It was through Jo that I found Florences maden name which enabled me to find the family.
The problem with the Official Birth Deaths and Marriages records is that they start in 1837 but the mothers' maiden name isn't recorded until the second half of 1911. Therefore it becomes very hard to trace the family members. Because Jo was born in 1919 Florences maiden name was recorded and from that I got the relevant census. So George Edward Jnr and Annie were a suprise to me as mum had never mentioned them.
Moses and his wife devorced in the early 1940's so mum had very little contact with him. However, she remembers going to see her grandmother Florence whenever she could. Florence died in 1942.

That Kiggin - Gallimore LInk
Now to explain fully the Kiggin Gallimore link.
First some history.
My Grandmother, Alice Kiggin was born Alice Hindley on 27th January 1910. Her mother was Mary Ann Gallimore, daughter of Hanna (nee Grocot) and Enoch Gallimore. Mary Ann married Robert Hindley in Leigh, Lancashire in 1898. Robert was a miner. They had 7 children, the eldest being Clara Jane born in 1899(She was another story) and Sarah Ellen was born in 1902.
Sometime between 1902 and 1910 the family moved to Hemsworth in North Yorkshire, which is a mining town. I think he may have moved with other family members as there were quite a few children born to Hindleys' here.
Besides Alice they also had Joseph in 1911 before returning to Leigh. Joseph was a sad young man. He had been engaged but had been thrown over by his fiance. He was so devastated that he hung himself in 1932 aged just 20 years old.
Clara Jane at some point changed her name to Masie. I had always known her as Maisie and when I mentioned Clara Jane to her nephew, he had never heard of her. Luckily enough there is an older family member who knew her. Clara Jane was, to coin a phrase, a bit of a goer. She had quite a reputation and was in all sorts of trouble including shoplifting!!!!!
Another brother was Robert Hindley jnr who played for Swansea FC in the 1940's. I know this is true but I have found minimal amounts of evidence. There is some information on the internet but not a lot.
The final 2 children were Doris, born 1915 and Molly born in 1921.
I knew very little about about this untill my grandmother passed away in 1995, when I was told who her mother was. As with some families, history was never discussed so I was left to discover it on my own.

Gallimore Family
The picture featured on my home page is of the Gallimore family. They are an interesting family and I will include a link to my family tree on Ancestry.co.uk.
The family originated in Cannock, which is in Staffordshire. It is amazing the amount of families who moved from Staffordshire to the North West, following the work in the mines. Another popular place was Hemsworth in Yorkshire, which was a big mining town. Miners moved where the work was and as property was rented, this was very easy to do. However, it makes life hard if you'r tracing your family tree.
The Gallimores were related to my Kiggin side of the family through my grandfather, Thomas, marrying Alice Hindley, whose mother was Mary Ann Gallimore.
Mary Anns' parents were Hanna and Enoch Gallimore who lived in Astley, which is a small mining towen in Lancashire, now part of Greater Manchester. Hanna and Enoch were killed in a house fire in 1910. Enoch was lighting a paraffin lamp which exploded in his hands and the paraffin covered his clothes. Hanna went to his rescue but she was badly burnt as well, so badly that they both died. A horrific way to die.

My Family
My family originated somewhere in Ireland, probably Galway. Mum was Bridget, dad was Patrick and they had 4 children, Catherine, Thomas, Bridget and Margaret all born in the 1850's. Bridget died at a few months old and Patrick died in 1861. It wasn't long after that their mum died.
Thomas was a carter and he married a young woman called Betsy. Betsy had a child called Thomas????? just before she married Thomas and I still wonder to this day if Thomas was his son.
Thomas and Betsy were very busy for the next few years producing a further 9 children, including a set of twin girls. Twins run in the my family........

The Journey Begins.....
This is a Journey that is already part way through and I expect I have a long way to go.
Once upon a time.....
My first grandchild was born 10 years ago and that wonderful event set me on a journey which has proved along the way to be addictive....
Once started it is very difficult to stop. The nicest part of the journey is that you meet not only like-minded people, but relatives who you never knew existed.
So far I have over 2000 people in my tree, which consists of my fathers and mothers sides, and their ancestors and so on and so on and so on.........
